The US dropped the bombs in preperation of the proposed invasion of the Japanese mainland. This opertion never happened. The US high command wanted to defeat Japan at the minimum cost of lives as the Japanese army was still strong.

The Battle of Bismarck Sea ended in a horrible defeat for the Japanese preventing them from reinforcing their army and gave us strength by sea. After the battle, the Japanese stopped trying to attack by sea giving us a huge advantage that would eventually win us the war.
