I believe that it totally depends on the person and other factors. I always used to listen to quiet, instrumental background music when I studied in the past. It helped relax me and keep me focused. There are many discussions about the pros and cons of studying to music. I like the canadian website makeanexam's blog # 15 on music and studying.

LoFi music is a great genre to listen to as it increases focus and concentration. The "CyberBar" channel on YouTube has lots of these types of music to help you study/work more effectively.

I would say that in your case the music is distracting your attention from what you are trying to study... try listening to music that has no lyrics. Instrumental stuff actually helps me memorize better. Good luck with it!
