Filtering sugar solution does not seperate sugar because sugar dissolves in water. This is because water is a solvent. Sugar bonds with the water molecules which results in an indiscriminate mixing of the sugar with water. Thus filtering can not seperate sugar from water.

The statement is correct in its intent and meaning, but in practicality, or in industry, it can.

First, the real answer your teacher would be looking for.

Since "sugar solution" usually means completely dissolved, then the sugar 'particles' are so small that they cant be filtered out. In essense, they are part of the water now. So its not like having some dead bugs and stuff floating in the water, where you could run it through a filter to remove the bad things and leave you with clean water.

All the dead bugs are in the water but they don't combine with the water to become a new sort of water. So they can be removed easily.

Now industry filtering. Think of your citys sewage treatment plant. To help clean the sewage water, the city first settles dumps it into a big tub and lets the heavy particles settle out in the bottom of the pit. They then pour off the liquid left over.

Then the city takes that liquid and 'filters' it over a whole bunch of rocks which are covered by mold and algae and stuff that 'eats' the bad stuff out of the water. When the left over water comes out of that big tub its clean enough to pour straight into a river but not clean enough to drink yet.

There are lots of other types of 'filters' that clean water for drinking that are designed to remove chemicals including 'sugar', but these are processes and not just a plain old filter like the filter paper you use in class.
