Written by Juan T Gatbonton, ?Clay? depicts a story of a boy?s friendship with an American solider. The short story is written in the first person point of view with the persona as the ?kid?. A lot of paragraphs with many short sentences in them make up the story. This is to make the readers feel every flow of event slowly so that we get a good view of the depiction of the scenes. The descriptions of every scene are so detailed that the reader can easily imagine him/herself in the situation. The purpose of this technique is to let the readers feel in the end how devastated the kid felt. The story started with the kid persona waking up looking forward to a usual day where he bonds with Clay. But the day was different because Clay could not be found in their usual meeting place. The lines ?I looked at the road that was Candaba?s main street?The Americans had built a bridge?This hard asphalt road ran up to the far-off Arayat mountain where the fighting was? reveals that the story is set in Pampanga during the American regime. A number of lines also suggest that the kid persona was studying in an underprivileged school back then. The classes start at noon for high school level. The absence of the teacher signifies no lessons for that certain class while others with the teachers present can still have it (?in the classroom nearest the stairway, they were having a program and somebody was singing?).
The kid?s acceptance of Clay as a best friend is odd. In the line ?Clay was one of the army mechanics. He was my best friend?, we are told that the kid did not treat Clay, an American soldier, as an enemy but rather as someone ordinary. We are hinted of the innocence of a 15-year-old boy at that time. On the other hand, of kid, the student and a teacher is very close that they would just go to the forest when they wanted. For the big part of the story, the kid persona was just mesmerizing the wonderful memories with his teacher and with Clay.
The kid lacked parental leadership and so he is easy to befriend and be warmly close to older people like a working teacher and a soldier. Notice that throughout the whole story, the readers are constantly given a very clear picture of everything the kid does, even all the people he meets but we do not see any adult taking part in his life (especially at home) except for Ms Rosete and Clay. While he was still at home, we do not see any encounter with a parent or him bidding them goodbye. While preparing to meet up with Clay, he did not eat, take a bath or wear footwear when he left?usually the things parents would force us to do. During the night, he can easily go to the barracks without difficulty of asking permission. The kid persona was also kind of detached from his peers because normally in school, you are with someone (Students, boys and girls, were gathered on the stairway, talking and laughing) and so the kid has Ms Rosete and Clay instead as friends.
Ms Rosete is the picture of an ideal woman at that time. She was beautiful, charming, kind, hospitable and makes her visitors feel that they are very welcome. Clay, however, takes advantage of the people different to him like the kid and Ms Rosete. He is rather mean to the kid who treats him as best friend. Worse, he took advantage of the innocence of Ms Rosete, his best friend?s close friend. This was indirectly revealed in the end using two very important symbolisms used in the short story: the pool and the carabao. The pool symbolizes Ms Rosete and it?s whiteness means that she is very pure. If the pool ?jewels the forest with its whiteness?, Ms Rosete jewels the school especially the kid with her vibrancy, beauty and limpidness. When she was gone, there was this gloomy mood in the school. The carabao, dirty and harsh, symbolizes Clay who is ruthless and messy. They didn?t give that much care and respect to the ?sacred? pool than the kid gives. Hence, it was easy for the carabao to make the water impure and for Clay to do something to the very inviting pool, Ms Rosete.
?But I sure convinced her last night, he said. I sure convinced her. Once ya get one of those babes convinced, they?re just like the girls here.? Ms Rosete, the woman the kid adores, the ?jewel of the school?, surprisingly, is being compared to the common ?girls here? all of a sudden. Clay and his friends laugh at the idea because they think that women here are all equal in terms of weakness into giving in to temptations. A woman who gives in to Clay is just any other woman weak enough to temptation. Even the purest woman can give in to the temptation a foreigner can bring.
?We are gonna have real ice-cream?I?ll get you some cake too.? Clay hides in ?ice cream? and ?cake? the fun that is in the barracks. ?Hey Kid! Here?s your ice-cream!? suggests that Clay really treats the persona as a youngster. The ice cream, which is an icon used for luring kids is a significant thing in the story because it reveals to what level does Clay and the kid?s relationship is: it was only about an adult making fun of a kid.

If the narrator is now omniscient, is this indicative of a god-like detachment from the horrific murder of Juan and his family? The unrelenting dripping of the oil might suggest such an ominously unfeeling, unemotional, cold, uncaring and unstoppable inevitability of death. Alternately, could it be a suggestion that Juan's consciousness - and conscience - survives in this now omniscient narrator, so that Juan now clearly comprehends the unstoppable corruption that sealed his fate and made his resistance doomed from the start.
