Software can be broadly divided into two categories: operating systems and application software. Operating systems manage the hardware and create the interface between the hardware and the user. Application software is the category of programs that do something useful for the user.

Computer soft-ware consists of a form of script (C++, Pearl, C, and Unix are most common), for programs. Now we have Java which enables our browsers to "filter" differences in coded html/htm/xml source code and Java/Flash/Shockwave in which we can create web page software known as "APPS") which your processor processes, then displays/opens/runs the scripts based on the file extension, i.e. .mp3, .pps, .xml, .htm, so on and so forth. This is basic rule of thumb from ALL "Legitimate" soft-ware companies.

Some Malware and Spyware is nothing but macros ( a set of tasks assigned to run automatically ) for the most part, and anything that is solely based on Macros is NOT classified as a Virus, just a pain in the ballzack.

As far as one piece of software being designed to perform a "Specific" task... that is out dated. Today we have pieces of software that can perform infinite tasks of all kinds, but we are limited to our Monopolizing OS Designers like Microsoft and their X86 (32 bit system) and X64 (64 bit system) which doesn't allow for us to run the processing and storage hardware in which we would need. "Firmware" or "BIOS" is what allows processors to add to the file .extensions tasks that they can perform so it knows how to display them. You can look at them as if they are decoders, so they are only binary, therefore very light.

Another thing is most soft-ware companies specialize in one category, such as security with Norton, web apps with Sun, Java, and Flash, or EA with games. Adobe, on the other hand, is a little bit more generalize so they can make stand-alone soft-ware (doesn't require a browser or is not dependent on another piece of software, code, or script that is not their own intellect) like Adobe Reader or one of their Server FTP programs as opposed to dependent on I.E. or FF for Java or Shockwave.
