Imagine an environment that is very dry and receives a lot of sunlight water is found deep below the soilwhich of the four groups of plants could survive in this environment?
CAM plants include succulents and cacti and are specifically
designed to survive in very dry, arid environments. They only open
their stomata at night, thereby reducing water loss through the
leaves while obtaining CO2.
C4 plants would not "survive" as well as a CAM plant in a very
dry environment but they would surely do much better than C3
plants, which lose 97% of their water intake right back out of
their leaves through transpiration. C4 plants fix CO2 twice instead
of only once to more effectively use water.
