One Verison:

Among other things, possibly not the meaning you want, the Starfire was the code name for the Lockheed F-94C subsonic jet fighter, the Starfighter was the much faster F-l04 sometimes these are confused. Most Lockheed planes had names with astornomical origins (Constellation, for example). The F-94C was a derivative of the old F-80 Shooting Star one of the first USAF jet fighters in production and sometime called by the alternate monicker of Jet Star. Not the ice cream thing!

Another Version:

The first Starfire appeared in 1963 in Teen Titans Comics. This first Starfire was a boy named Leonid Kovar who was exposed to an unknown energy when an alien spacecraft exploded when he and his father, a Soviet archaeologist, were exploring it. He later was known as Red Star, and joined the Teen Titans.

The second Starfire appeared in her own comic in 1976. She was one of the Eternal Champions of the Sornaii, raised as a slave of the Mygorg and as an adult broke free of slavery and started a resistance movement against the tyrannical King Sookarooth.

The third Starfire appeared first in 1980 in DC Comics Presents. As Princess Koriand'r, she was experimented on by the Psions and developed the ability to fire bolts of energy. She also had the ability to fly. She escaped to Earth and joined the Teen Titans.

Starfire also appeared as one of the Teen Titans in the animated series in 2003.
