Jack wants to kill. Jack loves the idea of hunting the beast. Ralph continuously says there is no beast. When Samneric report about what the beast looks like, Jack says he will hunt it and asks who wants to join him. Ralph, the more reasonable of the two, says they only have wooden spears. Ralph admits he is scared. He always thought the beast was fake, but now he think there might be a beast. In the end, Ralph and Jack both decide to hunt the beast.
Ralph believes the beast is a figment of the boys' imagination, a product of their fear and the darkness within them. Jack, on the other hand, promotes the idea of a physical beast on the island to instill fear in the boys and consolidate his power.
The beast came to life when the littluns told everyone it came at night out of water. Then the beast progressed to coming from the air when the parachutist fell from the sky and SamnEric saw it while watching the signal fire. Simon is the one to truly discover that the beast lives within the boys and that everyone has those savage instincts. When he discovers this, he goes to the top of the mountain and unwraps the parachutist and brings the parachute. In the end, the boys believe they killed the beast when in fact in was Simon.
Ralph instinctively knows that there is no such thing as "the beast" and repeats on a number of occasions, "but there is no beast!" Although Jack initially agrees he also adds the proviso, "but if there was a beast we'd hunt and kill it." Later he changes his stance to "How could we kill it?" ... "and remember, if you go hunting leave the head as an offering for the beast."
because they want to shut the littleuns up
Ralphs opinion about the beast is that it is not real and it was just the littleluns imagination or just a dream.
