It is always best to let The Bible speak for itself, so let's just take a look at what the book of Revelation says about itself: Revelation 1:1,2 - "The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave unto him, to shew unto his servants things which must shortly come to pass; and he sent and signified it by his angel unto his servant John, who bare record of the word of God, and of the testimony of Jesus Christ, and of all things that he saw." This in fact is the correct title for this book, and not "The Revelation of St. John the Divine", which is not part of the book and a misleading title that was added later, not by John.

So as the opening introduction indicates, it is a prophetic book, revealing or unveiling of Jesus Christ as the sovereign ruler of the universe, his plan for the ages to come, and how he will bring it about. The greater portion of the book of Revelation is taken up with the coming wrath upon a Christ rejecting world, and cataclysmic events that will bring this current evil world system to an end to usher in the new age of righteousness, peace and blessings, with Jesus Christ sitting on the throne of David and ruling the world form Jerusalem for a millenium. Satan will no longer roam the earth or accuse the saints before the throne of God, but will be bound in the bottomless pit for a thousand years. After a thousand years Satan will be released again for a short time to test the nations, he will be able to deceive them again for one final battle to try and overthrow the rule of Christ. That will bring about the final destruction by fire, and the final judgement of the great white throne, where all of the people from all the ages prior will be judged and condemned to the lake of fire. After that there is the new heaven and the new earth that are perfect in their eternal state of being with all sin, evil, death and curse forever banished from the presence of God and His people.

The book of Revelation can be divided into three main parts.

Chapter 1 describes a vision in which John saw Christ robed as a Judge and standing in the midst of the seven churches.

Chapters 2 and 3 have to do with the Church Age in which we now live.

The remaining nineteen chapters have to do with future events following the close of the Church Age.

This concerns the whole world, all people. For all children of God, the book teaches the folly of living for things that will shortly pass away.. For the unbeliever, the book is a solemn warning of the terrible doom that awaits all who reject the Savior.

ANOTHER ANSWER:

The book of "The Apocalypse" [which simply means nothing more sinister than 'the Revelation' or 'the Revealing'] concerns God's REVEALING to His Faithful, Trusting Servants on earth the final global events that shall lead up to THE DAY JESUS CHRIST RETURNS to earth to ESTABLISH THE KINGDOM OF GOD UPON IT.

"This is the Revelation from JESUS CHRIST which GOD [the Father] gave Him CONCERNING EVENTS THAT WILL HAPPEN SOON. An angel was sent to God's servant John SO THAT JOHN COULD SHARE THE REVELATION WITH GOD'S OTHER SERVANTS. John FAITHFULLY REPORTED THE WORD OF GOD and the testimony of Jesus Christ - EVERYTHING HE SAW." (Rev.1:1-2 NLT New Living Translation)

It's broken down into THREE CATEGORIES OF SEVEN that COMPLETE THE PLAN OF GOD, PERFECTLY and COMPLETELY[with Perfection symbolized by the number 3, andCompleteness symbolized by the number 7]. The three sets are the Seven Seals on the scroll, the Seven Trumpet Plagues, and the Seven Last Vials [or bowls] of GOD'S WRATH POURED OUT ON THE EARTH just before Christ descends upon the earth in wrath with His resurrected saints and His armies of angels in His "hostile takeover" of Government rulership on planet earth.

SIX of the SEVEN scroll seals are STRIPPED OFF or removed by Jesus in chapter SIX; each revealing events of global magnitude that occur and shall occur on earth, leading up to the "Day of the LORD"... or the Day that Jesus returns.

The first four seals: the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, ARE and HAVE BEEN the four major global events that man has come to take for granted as making up a "normal, average day-in-the-life" on planet earth -- FALSE RELIGIONS, WARS, FAMINES, and PESTILENCES AND DISEASES.

We cannot begin to imagine a world without these "staples of life on earth" that truly PLAGUE US, DAILY.

The FIFTH AND SIXTH SEALS on the scroll Jesus reveals as YET TO OCCUR IN OUR GENERATION. THE Fifth Seal: the GREAT TRIBULATION [extreme global horror and calamity of both economic and political magnitude that entails man's final attempt at"one-world government."]. And the Sixth Seal: THE HEAVENLY SIGNS of a cloud-covered earth... the global darkening of the light of the sun on earth, as well as great global upheaval that will CUT THE TRIBULATION SHORT [see Matt.24:21-22] --

"...the sun became dark as black cloth, and the moon became as red as blood. Then the stars of the sky fell to the earth... and the sky was rolled up like a scroll and taken away. And all of the mountains and all of the islands disappeared." (Rev.6:12-14 NLT)

The Seventh Seal on the scroll -- the DAY OF THE LORD; the global event of Jesus' return -- isn't stripped away by Jesus in chapter six; but MAKES UP THE REST OF THE BOOK OF REVELATION. The Seventh Seal is the coming global events of THE DAY OF THE LORD that is composed of the last two sets of seven: the SEVEN "wind-bourn" Trumpet PLAGUES [since trumpets are played by blowing into them]...

"...I saw four angels... HOLDING BACK THE FOUR WINDS FROM BLOWING UPON THE EARTH. Not a leaf rustled in the trees, and the sea became as smooth as glass." (Rev.7:1 NLT)

The events of Revelation are ongoing and overlapping. Just like false religions don't occur, then they stop and wars happen, then they stop and a famine occurs, then famines stop and diseases start up. No... history reveals that, basically, most, if not all, wars are directly or indirectly CAUSED BY FALSE RELIGIOUS BELIEF. And famines and diseases are THE RESULT of wars. These conditions extant on this earth keep our planet in this vicious cycle.

So shall it be that the trumpet plagues shall overlap the Great Tribulation, as chapter 11 shows God's Two Witnesses, whose testimony takes place then, wielding these plagues just like Moses and Aaron prior to the Exodus in the Old Testament.

"They have the power to shut the skies so that no rain will fall for as long as they prophesy [three-and-a-half years - see verse 3]. And they have the power to turn the rivers and oceans into blood, and to send every kind of plague upon the earth as often as they wish." (Rev.11:6 NLT)

The FINAL SEVEN VIAL PLAGUES occur late in Revelation in chapter 16... AFTER Jesus' arrival in the clouds of the earth's atmosphere causes the gathering of His saints into the clouds with Him until the "Wrath of God" is poured out.

Jesus then descends upon the earth in chapter 19. The removing of Satan from influencing the world during Christ's thousand year rule with His saints and the Judgment are revealed in chapter 20. And the remake of the earth and the renewal of creation is revealed in chapter 21, with a future description of God's temple, as well as a few sobering warnings to man finish out the book.

"Let the one who is doing wrong continue to do wrong; the one who is vile, continue to be vile; the one who is good, continue to do good; and the one who is holy, continue in holiness. See, I AM coming soon, and My reward is with Me, to REPAY ALL ACCORDING TO THEIR DEEDS." (Rev.22:11-12 NLT)

Revelation is God's "revealing of future global events" to His servants [those who believe what God says]. And ALL THE BOOKS OF THE BIBLE WILL BE OPENED ON JUDGMENT DAY to JUDGE ALL OF MANKIND... believers and unbelievers, alike:

"...'all who reject Me and My Message WILL BE JUDGED AT THE DAY OF JUDGMENT BY THE TRUTH I HAVE SPOKEN [which are the 'inspired Words' of God in the Bible]. I don't speak on My own Authority. THE FATHER who SENT ME gave Me HIS OWN INSTRUCTION [see Rev.1 again] as to what I should say." (John 12:48-49 NLT)

"I saw the [resurrected] dead... standing before God's throne. And THE BOOKS [of the Bible] WERE OPENED, including the Book of Life. And THE DEAD WERE JUDGED ACCORDING TO THE THINGS WRITTEN IN THE BOOKS, according to WHAT THEY HAD DONE [not according to which church they went to]." (Rev.20:12 NLT)
