The Pope wanted the crusaders to drive the Muslims out of the Holy Land and return control to Christians.
The holy city of Jerusalem, the place where Christ was crucified, was buried and came back to life and then ascended into heaven.
One reason was that he felt that is was the duty of Christians to seize back the Holy Land from the Turks and felt this might result in the uniting of Christianity.

The Crusaders wanted to control the city of Jerusalem.
It wasn't a country so much as a city; the Crusaders wanted to take over Palestine (Jerusalem) which was- and still remains- one of the largest holy centers in the world. At the time of the first Crusade, Palestine was in Muslim control, and, actually, the main reason for the Crusades was to recapture the holy land from the Islam religion.

They want to come back to the holy land after war in 1948.
Yes and No. History will tell you that the Crusaders went to Israel with no intention on going anywhere else. Some people argue however that they must have come over at some point due to the rock inscribed with the Crusaders holy cross found in Indiana. Most people, myself included, want to believe the finder of said rock made it himself. There's a whole 2-hour special on the History Channel about it, The Holy Grail in America , i think it's called. Hope that gives you an idea.
