DNA replication
replication
DNA replication is the process by which a cell duplicates its DNA. It occurs during the S phase of the cell cycle and involves the separation of the DNA double helix, the synthesis of new complementary strands, and the proofreading and correction of errors to ensure accurate duplication.
DNA is in the nucleus of a cell. When a cell divides (mitosis) the DNA in the nucleus must first duplicate. Basically an identical copy of the cells DNA is made. This creates another nucleus in the cell with a copy of the DNA. The cell it's self then divides, separating the 2 nuclei. Each cell having one each.
The period in which the cell is not dividing is called interphase. During interphase, the cell grows, duplicates its DNA, and prepares for mitosis or meiosis. It consists of three subphases: G1 (growth), S (synthesis of DNA), and G2 (preparation for division). Interphase is crucial for ensuring that the cell is ready for the subsequent division process.
The DNA is synthesized during the S-phase of the cell's Interphase (G1, S, G2)... That is why it is called the "S" phase-- standing for the word "synthesis".

When a cell duplicates, both the DNA and the chromosomes duplicate.
In the beginning of the eukaryotic cell cycle, the cell undergoes a phase called G1, where it grows and carries out normal functions. During this phase, the cell also duplicates its organelles and prepares for DNA replication in the subsequent phases.
