Check the emergency trunk release handle. It is in the trunk area, at the rear of the vehicle. If it is not secured in the clip, it can get hung up on something in the trunk area and keep the trunk/hatch from closing. -Tim
you need to crawl in the back of the trunk, where the latch is for the trunk, next to it on left side there is a cable that you can pull to manually relese the trunk/hatch.

On the lancer its easy just pop the trunk open find out which lights are out and take the screws out that hold the lights in place and pop the bulb out that isn't working by turning it and replace it.
