"One of the first clues to the mechanism of photosynthesis came from the discovery that the oxygen given off by plants through their stomata is derived from water and not from carbon dioxide." (Biology, Seventh Edition; Campbell, Reece. Chapter 10: Photosynthesis, page 184) It comes from the water

H2O

The reactants in photosynthesis are carbon dioxide (CO2) and water (H2O). Both contain oxygen, but from which compound does the O2 that we breathe come from? The assumption some time ago was that the oxygen in carbon dioxide eventually formed atmospheric oxygen. However, an experiment in the 1950s using a radioactive tracer (18O) followed the path of O2 back to H2O and not CO2.

The special chlorophyll a molecules of Photosystem II holds a water molecule so that a few photons of light will strike the electron bonds holding the hydrogen atoms to the Oxygen atom. When that happens, the water molecule releases its hydrogen atoms and they go to the next step where they are combined with Carbon dioxide for further processing. The Oxygen is released and combines with another Oxygen molecule.

How do photosynthesis and respiration take part in O2 cycle?

During photosynthesis O2 is released by the photolysis of water whereas in respiration O2 is consumed in the breakdown of substrate(reserve food). In simple words , Photosynthesis release O2 while respiration requires O2.

What exchanges gases between the plant and the atmosphere during photosynthesis?

CO2 is taken in by the plants from the atmosphere and O2 is released during photosynthesis.

From what molecule does oxygen get released during photosynthesis?

It is about H2O liquid. It releases the o2 gas.

What is the oxygen formed during photosynthesis called?

Oxygen formed during photosynthesis is the gas O2.

What type of gas is released into air after photosynthesis?

Oxygen (O2) is released back into the air after photosynthesis occurs.

What chemicals are produced during photosynthesis?

The chemicals producted during photosynthesis are oxygen, which is released as waste in the light dependent reaction, and glucose released in the Calvin Cycle

Where do the oxigens atoms in the O2 produced during photosynthesis come from?

It is produced from water. Water is broken down by photolysis to get electrons.

What is oxygen produced as during photosynthesis?

Diatomic Oxygen - O2.

What gas does a plant release during photosynthesis?

O2

What unused bi-products will you use during photosynthesis?

O2 is the unused byproduct of photosynthesis, that you use during cellular respiration.

What product is made during photosynthesis?

Photosynthesis produces O2 and Glucose which the plant equivalent of human defecation.Photosynthesis is the conversion of sunlight into ATP. ATP is used and burned inside the plan. What's is left is the unusable parts of the process which is converted to O2 and Glucose and released from the plant. We in turn breath in the O2 and exchange it for CO2, which the plant need for photosynthesis.

Plants use co2 and sunlight to produce what?

food ; it is glucose and oxygen is released by plants during photosynthesis
