About 200 million years ago.
Coal is formed plantlife buried in earth. Millions years ago carbon- based fossil fuel remains of vegetation that grew as long ago as 400 million years. When trees die in swarmy areas, accumulating layers upon layers, soggy dense material called peat. Sedimentary rocks were formed, pressure caused by the weight squeezed water from the peat. Increasing deeper burial and the heat associated with it gradually changed the material into coal.
