What are the roles of the US Congress?

Duties of the job:

1. Legislator
2. committee members- serve on smaller political bodies to which proposed laws (bills) are referred in each house. They must screen those proposals and decide which of said proposed laws will continue on to floor consideration (full membership of respective chambers [i.e. House of Representatives and The Senate])
3. representatives of their constituents (people of their states or districts)
4. servants of their constituents
5. Politicians

Although "congressman" may refer to any member of Congress, it often refers to a

member of the House of Representatives, the members of the Senate being called senators.

In either case, the congressman represents his district or state in the whichever house he

belongs to.

The purpose of the house is to make laws ( including changing laws already in effect.).

Therefore the congressman proposes and votes on bills which become law if the Congress

passes them and the President signs them. In order to decide which laws may be needed and

how to vote, the Congressman may hold and attend hearing which call witnesses to be

questioned . He or she may also make speeches , read and send out letters and meet with other congressmen in hopes of influencing their votes. He also reads his letters and meets with people who want Congress to act on certain issues. He is also likely to be always

campaigning for reelection by making his record as appealing as possible to voters in his

district. He has a staff to help him and has to manage his staff.

A congress is a legislative body. In the US the principle is division of powers, with congress making laws, the executive administering them, and the courts settling disagreements. So members of congress introduce bills and enact them into law to be signed by the president.
