If a farmer had 17 sheep in total, and all but nine died, then the answer to this riddle would be nine, since it states that all but nine have perished. It does not state that "nine died" because it has the key word "but" in it - that will often throw the riddled person off if he or she is not listening to the riddler, thinking that nine died, not eight, which is what occurred.
