When water is used as a coolant by power plants or is affected by urban runoff, thermal pollution can occur. Thermal pollution is the result of a change in natural water temperature that causes a decrease in the levels of dissolved oxygen in water.

Thermal pollution can affect air and water directly. It can also alter the ecosystems to which it is directed. These include:

  • Warm water discharge from industry to municipal drains to smaller streams which change the water's oxygen content, effect spawning cycles and egg viability and van make the pollutants more active
  • Temperature inversions caused by city asphalt and concrete areas where heat from a city can be trapped under a cooler air level which traps pollutants like ozone, hydrocarbons and sulfur dioxide in the community air
  • The same sources of city heat can cause a heat island effect caused by cirri where the rising hot air cts as a barrier to winds diverting them to other locations. This can reduce pollution dispersing, reduce area rainfall and increase the levels of pollutants in the city

What is the excessive heating of a body of water called?

The excessive heating of a body of water is called thermal pollution. Thermal pollution is similar to the greenhouse effect.

How can thermal pollution be caused by soil erosion?

Thermal pollution can be caused by soil erosion, as the sediments make the water muddy and thus increase light absorbency and thermal pollution

What pollution raises the temperature of water in waterway?

When the temperature of water in waterways increases, it's called thermal pollution.

Control measures of thermal pollution?

Thermal pollution is the result of water that is warmer than the natural temperature of a waterway being released into it. Heating or cooling water to match the temperature of the waterway before it is released will help to resolve thermal pollution.

An increase in a body of water's temperature caused by adding warmer water is called?

What is being done about Thermal Pollution?

One thing that being done about thermal pollution is that less electricity is being used. Another thing is that heated water is being reused and stored to reduce thermal pollution.

What factories cause thermal pollution?

Those factories having boilers use coal as their fuel, cause thermal pollution.

Does nuclear energy cause air pollution?

no nly thermal pollution

How can factories reduce thermal pollution?

Thermal means 'temperature' and 'environment' means that which surrounds you. Temperature would include the ambient heat of the air, hot/cold surfaces and sources of thermal radiation. Thermal pollution is usually caused by Man's production and use of energy or by Man's urban conurbations. There is little that can be done to reduce this form of pollution. However, thermal energy radiates away very quickly and Man's direct contribution to the heat/cold of the environment is minimal. It is greenhouse gasses that are causing the biggest thermal pollution but this is an indirect means of thermal pollution of the planet.
