How do you remove a Toro lawnmower blade?
Toro blades are normally assembled/tightened with impact drivers making it nearly impossible for the do-it-yourselfer to loosen the blade. If you don't have an impact driver you will have to take it to someone who does. ------- You can get them loosened with a little ingenuity. The Toro 22" mower user manual advises you to tip the mower completely on its side (air filter side up), and use a two-by-four board to chock the blade along the bottom to keep it from turning. Place your right foot on the board to keep it steady, and use a rachet to loosen the nut (standard counterclockwise). Of course, arm strength alone might not be enough to get that sucker loose (it sure wasn't enough for me). So the trick is to step on the rachet handle with your left foot (keeping your right foot on the board), and apply pressure with your foot to loosen the nut. Depending on your weight, you might have to almost stand on the rachet handle (be extra careful, because you don't want that blade whipping around), but it WILL loosen. When you put your new/newly-sharpened blade on, switch feet, switch board position, and step on the rachet handle to tighten the blade nut (standard clockwise). Don't be afraid of putting some muscle into it -- the manual says the blade nut is "very difficult to overtighten." Exercise caution, and always keep the board chock in place. Note:Since removing the blades of your mower either to replace or to sharpen the blades are done rather often the safest,fastest and easiest way is to purchase an automotive impact gun(with variable settings) and a set of impact sockets..These impact guns are either electric or air powered (if you have an air compressor)...Simply raise the mower, lock off the blade from turning,spray the nut with a little penetrating oil,select correct size socket and set impact gun to reverse and remove nut..When replacing the nut start the nut by hand and then use the impact gun to run the nut down,then finish by using a torque wrench to set the nut to its proper torque for your model mower... Electric Impact guns can start out as lowas $30 and can save you from having to strain, from busting your knuckles,your foot,or your knee when a rachet slips or worse yet putting to much force on the nut and breaking it off.. since many mowers can last 10-15 years or more the purchase of an impact gun is well worth the cost since it can also be used for automotive as well..
