A Paramecium has a plasma membrane that is much less permeable to water than other membranes of most cells. The Paramecium cell is also equipped with a contractile vacuole, an organelle that functions to force water out of the cell as fast as it enters by osmosis.

The paramecium must pump water out of the cell.

The reason for this is osmosis. This is the movement of water across a cell membrane into the stronger of two solutions (the one with the higher total concentration of solutes). This stronger solution is said to be hypertonic; the weaker solution is hypotonic.

In a hypotonic environment, such as fresh water, water continuously enter a paramecium by osmosis, and a contractile vacuole collects it and pumps it out.

paramecium prefer hypotonic because the water will diffuse into the paramecium cell and help it to keep it plump and structured. Also paramecium are single celled organisms that live in ponds so it would make sense that it would want more water. Also plant cells live in a hypotonic enviroment. Red blood cells prefer isotonic if you wanted to know :)

They will have to constantly be pushing water out by using the vacuole organelle.
