In the movie, Tom Berenger's character describes his "antique" rifle as a 7.92mm German Mauser. In reality, it appears to be a Russian 7.62 x 54 Mosin Nagant Model 91/30. Two very different rifles. The Mosin Nagant was used extensively in both World War I and World War II.

Also notice when Berenger picks up the rifle to clean it, the bolt is straight out, parallel to the receiver. Just as an original Mosin Nagant would be. The problem is that the bolt would not open all the way with a scope mounted because the bolt would have to be straight up (90 degrees) to the receiver.

So, incredibly, in the next scene, our hero has somehow welded that bolt down flat, mounted the scope, and sighted that rifle in to its potential 1 MOA. Ah, the magic of Hollywood.
