Daphne loved trees, flowers, and animals. She did not praise other (forms of) life. Apollo was the god of the sun. He was also the god of light and intelligence [literally, the passage says 'light of the mind']. Because of this, he was dear to the Greeks.

Father Peneus loved his daughter and loved to see Daphne happy. He changed Daphne into a tree. Daphne was now a laurel and after these events was the sacred tree of Apollo.
