Medically it was a joke ... doctors were more likely to make you worse than to help you improve. The only thing that the patient had on his/her side was the self-repairing properties of the human body. (This didn't change until the 1930s and 1940s).

However, in 1848 anesthesia was invented which allowed surgery to begin to flourish.

It too was dangerous; wearing blood & pus splattered coats was the in thing to do.

But they did learn.
