There are different types of Sugars. Mono-saccharides like Glucose(Dextrose.) and Fructose and Bi-saccharides like Sucrose, Maltose and Lactose. So human cells can use a form of Glucose isomer that is Dextrose. So practically it is Dextrose solution in which you will keep the cell. Molecular formula of Dextrose is C 6 H 12 O 6. So mass number of Carbon, Hydrogen and Oxygen is 12,1,16 respectively. So molecular mass of Dextrose is 12*6 plus 1*12 plus 16*6 equal to 180. So if you add 180 grams of Dextrose in one liter water, you have one molar solution of Dextrose. As you know that 0.9 % Sodium chloride solution is Isotonic. It means 9 gram/liter.Mass number of Sodium is 23 and of Chlorine is 35.5. Total of them is 58.5 is a mass number of Sodium Chloride. So one mole of Sodium chloride will contain 58.5 grams/liter of water. As one mole is equal to 1000 mili mole,you have 1000*9/58.5 equal to 153.8 means 154 mili mole/ liter of Sodium chloride. If you apply same formula here, you have 58.5 to 9 then to 180 you have 27.7 grams of Glucose will make the solution Isotonic as per mathematics. But in practice, the cell will start consuming Dextrose rapidly for Biological Oxidation as against Sodium chloride, to which it will not allow entry. Making less and less percentage of Glucose present outside the cell. Which becomes Hypo-tonic. So in practice you take 5 % solution of Dextrose as Isotonic.Whenever Patient on par-enteral fluid complains of thrust, you give 5 % Dextrose solution to him. Which is converted to plane water after consumption of Dextrose by body cells.So it is one of the most tricky question which requires knowledge of Mole concept of Chemistry as well as of Human Physiology(Biology.) and Biochemistry to answer the same.

Isotonic solution: A solution that has the same solute concentration as the cells and blood. Isotonic solutions are commonly used as intravenously infused fluids in hospitalized patients.

when a cell is in a isotonic environment , it means the the amount (concentration) of the solutes in the solution and the amount (concentrarion) of solutes in the cell itself is Equal.

So both the solution and Cell have EQUAL amount or Equal concentration of SOLUTES (like salt, sugar, Na+ etc) .

Example

If the cell has 50% salt or any solutes

and you place the cell in a solution that has 50% salt or any solutes

then you can say that the cell is in Isotonic Environment. There will be no change in cell's shape.

But if cell has 30% salt and you place the cell in a solution that has 70% salt

then the cell is in Hypertonic solution. Then the water will move out of cell into solution to achieve equilibrium through osmosis. the cell will shrink.

And If the cell has 80% salt and you place the cell in a solution that has 20% salt then the cell is in Hypotonic solution. Then water will move out of solution and come into cell through osmosis to achieve equilbrium and the cell will swell( cell will be come bigger) .

You have 60 % of water in your body. 40% in the intro-cellular compartment and 20 % in the Extra cellular compartment. So it comes to be 40 liters in a 'Average' man weighing 70 kg.It means 28 liters in intro-cellular and 14 liters in extra cellular compartment. Human body has carried with it the part of sea, probably as a extra cellular compartment.Isotonic means that tonicity of fluid equal to body fluid.In extra cellular compartment, Sodium chloride is present mainly.
