this happened to us a couple of times. we believe it is caused by an air bubble in the brake lines, because pumping the brakes only makes it worse and if you leave it alone for about an hour, it fixes itself. i dont know if there is such a thing as flushing the brake lines, but you could look into it. we would like to fix the problem once and for all, but truthfully are afraid it might end up being a huge, expensive job.

Why won't my VW Beetle shift into 4th gear?

Gearbox may be worn There's two places on the 'shift rod' under the tunnel that wears out. It's probably the shifter 'shift coupler' or the 'shift rod bushing' under the gear shift. Pick up the "Bentley" Bug manual for your year and it will tell you how to do it. Kinduv a pain but still do-able.

Your 69 bug is stuck in 1st gear but the shifter moves freely through the grear sequence. Whats wrong?

Hi have you tryed looking at the gear linkage, these can some times break you will find it under the rear seat under a cover plate in the centreof the seat. it's what conects the gear box to the rod that runs down the centre of the car to the gear stick. easy to replace and the part should be readerly avalable from a v-dub supplier Its most likely the hockey stick or the shift coupler, hopefully the shift coupler

What is wrong with my vw bug when it wouldn't go into gear?

Is your Bug currently on a level surface? Do this: With the engine off, open the hood and put the car in gear. Then go back there and, with one of your buddies, push the car. If the engine turns (and the car's really hard to push), the car WILL go into gear. If the engine won't turn, the shift linkage is worn out. You get the shift linkage as a "coupler" that mounts on the shifter rod and a rubber bushing. You get to this by removing the back seat base. There's a plate on the transmission tunnel. Take it off, and the shift linkage is right in there. Don't bother jacking the car up; the setscrew for the linkage is on top. If it's not that, try adjusting the clutch. If that doesn't work, you'll have to replace the clutch--which means pulling the engine.

What is the proper shifting technique for a semi-auto trans in a classic bug?

1. Accelerate as normal to shift point. (As marked on speedometer.) 2. Place hand on shifter and shift to desired gear. (DO NOT REST YOUR HAND ON SHIFTER at any other time AS THIS WILL DISENGAGE TRANSMISSION FOR SHIFTING. if the shifter is properly wired up, any presure on the shifter will disengage the transmission.) I changed my 1968 Bug from an auto stick to manual because of this.

Why is Gear box oil leaking from back plate on 64 bug what to do?

A gear box oil could be leaking from the back plate on a 64 Bug because of a bad gasket. If this is the case, the gasket needs to be replaced.
