Well, in the tv show they said that when she was little she had scarlet fever and it damaged the nerves in her eyes and therefore her sight kept getting worse and eventually it got so bad that she went blind. But in the little house book By the Shores of Silver Lake they said that when Mary was 14 she, Ma, Carrie and Grace all got scarlet fever, but Mary got the worst of it and went blind within a month.
The scarlet fever made her blind and she stayed that way because the nerves in her eye had been permanently damaged.
