Was Britain ready for World War 2?

Britain had started rearming in 1934 but had underrated the dynamism of Nazi Germany and the speed of German rearmament. However, by mid 1940 Britain was sufficiently well prepared to avoid invasion. The huge investment in RAF Fighter Command and co-ordinatedradar stations paid off.

Very close actually, but he made a few fatal flaws that caused Germany to lose. 1. Was that he should have finished off GBR first before attempting an invasion on the Soviets. By doing so he would be able to concentrate all his efforts on Russia. 2. He shouldn't of attacked the Soviet Union that soon and waited until they were the only force left. Also if he had withdrew from Stalingrad like he was warned to do, he would of saved nearly 100,000 German soldiers from capture and death. 3. He should of never declared war on the United States and let the U.S. just fight with Japan. So by the U.S entering in Europe, Germany was fighting a bloody war on 2 fronts which in turn could have been fought entirely on one.

It is a common misconception that Britain was close to loosing the Battle of Britain.

Germany could not break the deadlock and after fighting a severe war of attrition Germany could not sustain the attacks especially after suffering high casualties.

Britain however did sustain continuous raids on her cities by German bombers but this was not going to achieve victory and did not hamper the RAF's ability to continue functioning at full capacity.

Not all that close as a lot of people believe.

Despite the Luftwaffe attacking RAF airfields they failed to effectively put them out of service for anything longer than a day.

Germany was fighting a severe battle of attrition and most of their pilots were suffering from exhaustion and low morale. Luftwaffe fighter escorts had little time over British skies as their fuel severely limited their capabilities to escort bombers.

British aircraft production was very high and aircraft were readily available. Britain's main problem was replacing pilots lost in battle. However most RAF pilots could parachute to safety in the English countryside and live to fight another day this was not the case with the German air crews.

RAF fighter aircraft proved highly efficient and a more than capable adversary of the Luftwaffe.

Britain had an invaluable weapon, Radar which allowed RAF squadrons to intercept Luftwaffe formations as they crossed the channel along with an efficient command and control system.

Losses at the end of the battle were -

Luftwaffe - 2,500 aircrew

RAF - 544 pilots
