The engagement was broken off because of Chopin's health (he had tuberculosis from a young age). Later, he had a nine year relationship with Amantine Lucille Aurora Dudevant, a writer whose pseudonym was George Sand. They lived together for nine years, unable to marry because George could not get a divorce from her husband from whom she was separated.
