James Madison was a Patriot. That means he did not agree with the British's control over The United States and found some of their rules unfair.

He participated in the Philadelphia Convention in 1787, where he debated controversial topics and helped decide how much control the British would still have when America's new government was created and George Washington was elected. He was on the Patriots' side and supported/respected George Washington.
