God entered the the world as a poor boy would. This was to teach the lesson that God does not care about a person's position in this world he is only interested in those that follow his word and it doesn't take money or anything else to do that. The rejection of Jesus at the time of His Incarnation, being lain on the wood of a manger (a feeding trough, not the "barn or shed) vs. the rejection of Jesus at the point of his death, being lain on the wood of the cross. "born of the virgin Mary" ... " ...suffered under Pontius Pilate, crucified, died and was buried. On the third day he rose from the dead..."

As you will recall there was no room in the Inn for Mary and Joseph to lodge. Mary was very soon to have a baby. They either found a stable or some say a cave that was used as a stable for animals. There was nothing in this stable except some hay and a manger. A manger is a feeding trough for animals. So Jesus was laid in the manger (sort of like a crib.) Mary and Joseph probably slept on the floor.

hmm... if in 'delivered' you mean born then yes. he was delivered in a manger because when Virgin Mary came to Bethlehem to give birth to the Lord's son, Jesus, there was no place to stay. every house was filled. People were even sleeping on the floor. So Mary went to an animal manger, and there she gave birth to Jesus Christ.</

AnswerLuke's Gospel says that Jesus was found in a manger, because there was no room in the inn. Joseph and Mary had travelled from Nazareth in Galilee to Bethlehem in Judea.

Matthew's Gospel suggests that Bethlehem was the home town of Joseph and Mary, so they had no reason to travel. Jesus was found in a house. There is no mention in this Gospel of a manger.

When did the traditional depiction of the Nativity in religious art switch from a grotto or cave to a stable and manger?

This happened in the 1200s. Many people mistakenly believe that a manger is a building. The manger is not a building, the manger is the little bed-like thing that baby Jesus was placed in. It was used to feed hay to animals. Jesus was placed in one of this, in a place where animals were kept. The depiction of the Magi has also changed over time, both in the race of the individual kings and their mode of transport. In the middle ages, they were also depicted as arriving on horses. Nowadays, they arrive on camels.
