Leif Ericson was born in Iceland around the year 960 ad. Leif's farther was Eric the Red, he moved to Iceland when Leif's grandfather Thorvald was expelled from Norway for killing a man during a dispute. Like most other Viking boys, Leif spent most of his childhood life away from his family. When Leif turned eight years old he lived with a man named Thyrker, a German Leif's farther had captured. Thyker was very well educated he taught Leif how to read, write, spell, and speak in the right way. Thyrker also taught Leif how to speak Ireland and Russian, and also taught him how to be a good trader. Leif loved the sea, he would often watch all the ships come into the harbor. He loved people telling him about there life on boats and sailing in the water. One of Leif's first trips was when he went with his farther to Norway to bring gifts to a great Viking, his name was King Olaf. This trip would bring so many changes to Leif's life. He went on this trip in 984 Leif was only 24 years of age. Later on in life Leif became very restless in his Greenland home. So he decided to find some land. Leif asked his dad Eric the Red what he thought he said "there is no way you are going to do that" but Leif nagged and nagged so Eric finally gave in and said ok. On his way to the land Eric fell from his horse and had sprained his ankle. So now Eric was not able to go. Leif was now on his own.
