St. Patrick's Day is always March 17th. In 2008, due to St. Patrick's Day happening during Holy Week, the celebration of the feast in the church in Ireland took place on March 15th, as it is not normal to have an feasts celebrated during Holy Week. The 17th was still St. Patrick's Day however. The celebration of it was on the 15th, in the same way that people sometimes have their birthday party on a day near their birthday, as opposed to on the day for practical reasons, like it being easier to have a party at the weekend. The date of their birthday is still the same though.
Tradition says that St. Patrick died on March 17. However, there is no proof of that.
Frequently the feast day of the saint is the date he/she died. However, with Patrick we are not even sure of the year he died, much less the date. When thism occurs, the Church Fathers can choose any day of the year, as was the case of St. Patrick.
