No, Mary Magdalene was not an apostle, but she was a disciple of Jesus. A disciple is a person who believes in Jesus and follows His teachings.

Mary Magdalene was called the apostle to the apostles because Jesus told her to tell his 12 chosen disciples that he had risen and was ascending to his father (John 20) The Greek word for disciple literally means student while the Greek word for apostle means a messenger or sent one. Since Jesus sent Mary to the disciples to tell them the message of his resurrection, she was called the apostle to the apostles. She was called this at various times in the church history, in the 4th and 8th centuries.

In Vatican City, Jul 22, 2016 .- Faithful to the wish of Pope Francis, a new decree entitled entitled “Mary Magdalene, apostle of the apostles” has bumped the liturgical celebration honoring St. Mary Magdalene from a memorial to a feast, putting her on par with the apostles.

The reason, according to Archbishop Arthur Roche, is that she “has the honor to be the first witness of the Lord’s resurrection.”

“She is the witness to the risen Christ and announces the message of the Lord’s resurrection just like the rest of the Apostles,” he said, explaining that for this reason “it is right that the liturgical celebration of this woman should have the same rank of Feast as that given to the celebration of the Apostles in the General Roman Calendar.”

There are several opinions on what constitutes an apostle and when the 12 became Apostles. Some say it was when Jesus sent them out in pairs to teach during his ministry.

Some say an apostle was someone who had seen the risen Lord Jesus. This is why Saint Paul was called an apostle because he saw Jesus after his resurrection but before his final ascension on the road to Damascus.

Others say it was when they went out to establish churches after Jesus' ascension and their baptism by fire from the holy spirit. There are other viewpoints as well
