The Templars were a military order in the literal sense- they fought in wars and crusades. Clergymen- especially the Pope are forbidden to take up arms- so to speak (Chaplains in the Armed forces are no exception- they do not carry weapons or have any training in their use- no target practice with the .45 for Chaplains) I also believe That Pope Alexander VI assumed his position ( he was of the Borgia family) long after the Templar order had dissolved.
