The USA had not recognized Communist China since it won the Revolution in the 1940s. For Republican President Richard Nixon to go to China, meant that the USA finally accepted that the government in Beijing was legitimate and not going away. The USA also used Communist China and the Soviet Union to help it withdraw from South Vietnam in January 1973 and end it's involvement in the Vietnam War.
