Surprisingly, many of the leading Bolsheviks were Jewish. Leon Trotsky (born Lev Bronstein) was Jewish. Grigori Zinoviev and Lev Kamenev were Jewish. There were other Bolsheviks who were Jewish. Virtually all changed their names from their Jewish ones to ones that sounded more Russian so that they would be accepted more readily by other revolutionaries who were ethnic Russian.

Most Bolsheviks were not; however some important ones were Jewish by ancestry but did not practice their religion. Some Jewish Bolsheviks of note were Vladimir Lenin (only one quarter), Leon Trotsky, Grigory Zinoviev and Lev Kamenev. That they were not practicing Jews is not surprising, since Marxism/Bolshevism repudiated religion in all forms.

A disproportionate number of Bolsheviks were Jews (when compared to the Russian population as a whole), but the majority of Bolsheviks were not Jews. Additionally, those Bolsheviks who were Jews, were predominantly non-religious Jews or Jews exclusively by ethnicity.
