Gene Kelly was married to Betsy Blair, a actress, from 22 September 1941 - 3 April 1957. They had one child, Kerry Kelly Novick. Although Blair and Kelly divorced in 1957, in interviews and her 2002 autobiography, The Memory of All That, Betsy Blair had only the highest praise for Gene Kelly. Betsy Blair died in March 2009.

Kelly's second wife was his choreographic assistant, Jeanne Coyne. They married on August, 1960. They had two children, Timothy and Bridget. Jeanne Coyne died of leukemia on May 10, 1973, and a heartbroken Kelly curtailed his professional commitments in order to raise their two children, aged eleven and eight.

Kelly married his third wife, Patricia Ward, forty years his junior, on July 20, 1990. They met in 1985, when she was a writer on a television project. Kelly hired her to help with his memoirs. They were married at the time of his passing, February 2, 1996. Patricia Ward Kelly is currently the sole trustee of the entity granting the rights to use Gene Kelly's name, voice, image and persona.
