∙ 14y agoThe Continental Army generally used smoothbore muskets, not rifles. These were the standard military weapon of the day and were made so that a bayonet could be attached to them. There were from time to time units with the Continental Army made of backwoodsmen from Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania who did bring their own long rifles with them, such as Daniel Morgan's Riflemen. These rifles could not mount a bayonet. The bayonet charge was often the decisive tactic in an engagement.
