Yes he was. Although he was deeply influenced by the Illustration´s thinkers (mainly desitic and anti-christian), he retained his catholic religion. There´s no evidence whatsoever that he was not a catholic, like the overwhelming majority of the french at that time. Also bear in mind that nobility had always strong ties with the church.
