Shah Mohamed Reza Pahlavi left Iran,due to riots and protests against his rule, in January 1979.Ayotallah Khomeini became the ruler of Iran in February of 1979 upon returning from exhile in France. Though Khomeini died in the 80s, as did the Shah years earler, Iran is still governed by an Islamic government.

During World War I, Iran, a neutral nation, served as a battleground between the Russians and the Ottomans, putting many Iranians in danger. The British also launched an attack on the nascent Soviet Union through Iran and the Soviets responded by annexing Iranian territory to create buffer states. The bureaucracy under Ahmed Shah Qajjar was also weak and unruly. As a result, Reza Shah Pahlavi performed a coup d'etat and became the Shah of Iran in an attempt to reassert Iranian power and regional influence in 1925.
