The East side of Berlin was controlled by the U.S.S.R and was communist, while the West side was controlled by the U.S. and was capitalist.
East was communist and run by the Soviets. The West side was run by the Allies and remained free of Communism.
berlin.
Because their was a wall down the Middle, separating East Germany and Berlin from West Germany and West Berlin. The East side was supported by the Soviets while the West side was supported by Americans.
At the end of WW2 Berlin was divided into 4 sectors. One of the sectors became East Germany (German Democratic Republic) and was controlled by Russia. In order to keep its people inside its borders the Berlin Wall was pre-fabricated and erected and guarded by the Russians. There was a checkpoint called Checkpoint Charlie that on one side was the West and the other the East. To enter East Germany people had to go through the checkpoint into communist East Germany. This was the cold war.
The Eastern Side of the Berlin Wall was primarily inhabited by residents of East Berlin and the German Democratic Republic (GDR), which was a socialist state established in 1949. This area was under the control of the Soviet Union, and its government enforced strict measures to prevent citizens from fleeing to the West. The populace included a mix of workers, government officials, and families, all living under the surveillance of the state. The wall itself was a symbol of the division between the communist East and the democratic West during the Cold War.
The eastern side.
Berlin Checkpoint Charlie was in the middle of the street on Friedrichstrasse. It was at the intersection of Friedrichstrasse and Zimmerstrasse. When you crossed Zimmerstrasse you were then in East Berlin. The Kreuzberg District of Berlin in the old American Sector. :)
because the east's side government was communist and the west side's government was Democratic and too many people were fleeing to the west side from the east side. The east side put up the wall so they could control their people more, and they were not allowed to leave.
There wasn't actually a wall between East Germany and West Germany. The border was a series of fences and other fortifications. It was normally referred to as the 'inner German border' or the 'Iron Curtain'. The Berlin wall was between West Berlin and East Berlin. Note 'East Germany' and West Germany' were names used by the English-language media. The proper names of the two countries was 'Deutsche Demokratische Republik' (DDR = German Democratic Republic) and 'Bundesrepublik Deutschland' (=BRD, Federal Republic of Germany). East Berlin was part of the DDR. West Berlin was not part of the BRD, it was a separate entity.
That would be East and West Germany Bob. One side communist and the other democratic.
The Berlin Wall didn't exist until 1961.
