YES ,1912 TO 1932, IF NOT THEY WERE LAMINATED BARRELS DO NOT USE MODERN AMMO
no, i have a 235 Stevens and can assure you can fire smokeless loads . the 1914 Stevens catalog states the barrels are made of high compressed steel for nitro powder (smokeless).
The initial answer furnished is NOT correct. The Stevens 235 was not made with Damascus barrels, the real area of concern with it in using modern ammo (i.e. 2 3/4" 12 ga. shells) is the chamber length of the gun versus the length of the shotgun shell.
Early 12 ga. shotguns had a chamber length of 2- 1/2 inches, modern 12 ga. ammo (standard, not magnum) is 2-3/4 inches.
Excessive and unsafe pressure levels can result when the longer shell is fired in the shorter chamber, when the crimp unfolds on the longer shell, it reduces the bore diameter and clearance for the wad to pass through at that area.
ALWAYS have older shotguns examined before firing by a qualified gunsmith to see if the chamber is 2-1/2" and have it reamed to accept modern ammo. (references - NRA Dope Bag, Savage & Stevens Arms - Jay Kimmel).
