I just finished reading Ineritance, in the acknowledgements cp says that he does not intend to leave Alagaesia forever. He does not know when however(hopefully soon!) cp also doesnt say if he will use the same time period and cast of characters, although in reading the acknowledgments is sounds like he plans to use them again.

∙ 12y agoAs of right now that is still unknown. Christopher Paolini has alluded to writing a 5th book for the Eragon story line. When asked about the loose end left with Belt of Beloth never being found, he replied, "Just wait to read the 5th book." He also said that he was thinking of writing an epilogue to fill in some of the gaps left. That would just be for the Eragon story line though. He has also expressed interest in writing other stories set in Alagaësia, nine others to be exact. But to counter that he said that as much as he loves Alagaësia he has other stories and worlds in mind to tell.

∙ 12y agoYes, there was:
"I plotted out the Inheritance series as a trilogy nine years ago, when I was fifteen. At that time, I never imagined I'd write all three books, much less that they would be published. When I finally delved into Book Three [Brisingr], it soon became obvious that the remainder of the story was far too big to fit in one volume. Having spent so long thinking about the series as a trilogy, it was difficult for me to realize that, in order to be true to my characters and to address all of the plot points and unanswered questions Eragon and Eldest raised, I needed to split the end of the series into two books."
- Christopher Paolini, author of the Eragon series.
As of now, there has been no official announcement regarding a fourth book in the "Inheritance Cycle" series by Christopher Paolini.
