While some historians, as well as, the Official Record of the Civil War, considers Palmito Ranch to be a post-war engagement, and the Battle of Columbus to be the true last battle, It should be noted that the official record of any war is always written by the winner, in this case the Union, and it has been strongly suggested that Union officials flatly refused to recognize a Confederate victory as the final battle, particularly when Confederate forces were so overwhelmingly outnumbered by Union forces. Also worth noting, while it may or may not have influenced the outcome, is that although Colonel Barrett, the Union commander, had been commissioned in 1862, he had never actually been in combat.
