T Suhe First Battle In The Civil War Was When The Confederate Army Attacked Fort Sumter. The Last Battle Was Fort Blakey ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- While the Battle of Fort Blakely was among the final battles of the war, it was not the last battle. The last OFFICIAL battle of the Civil War was the Battle of Columbus on the Georgia/Alabama border on April 16, 1865, a week after Fort Blakely and 2 days after Lincoln was killed, between Union General James H. Wilson, and Confederate General Howell Cobb and ended in a Union victory. HOWEVER, The last major armed engagement between Union and Confederate forces was the Battle of Palmito Ranch, outside of Brownsville, Texas and near the Sea Port of Los Brazos de Santiago, on May 12-13, 1865between troops under the command of Union Colonel Theodore Barrett, and Confederate Colonel John "Rip" Ford and ended with a force of 300 Confederates defeating over 1700 Federals that were garrisoned at the port. While some historians, as well as, the Official Record of the Civil War, considers Palmito Ranch to be a post-war engagement, and the Battle of Columbus to be the true last battle, It should be noted that the official record of any war is always written by the winner, in this case the Union, and it has been strongly suggested that Union officials flatly refused to recognize a Confederate victory as the final battle, particularly when Confederate forces were so overwhelmingly outnumbered by Union forces. Also worth noting, while it may or may not have influenced the outcome, is that although Colonel Barrett, the Union commander, had been commissioned in 1862, he had never actually been in combat. It has also been stated that the French Foreign Legion, at the time occupying Matamoros, Mexico across the Rio Grande, reinforced Confederate troops from across the river, however this was not noted by either commander in the after action reports. In the completely useless, but interesting trivia tidbit category: At the Battle of Columbus, a Confederate soldier named John Stith Pemberton was injured by the slash of a Union saber. Preoccupied with finding effective pain killers because of this injury, he became a druggist after the war and started experimenting with such things as Coca leaves and Kola nut extract. It was with one of these failed pain killing concoctions that John had created Coca-Cola.
