What kind of green catepiller is found on tomato plants?

It's either a tomato hornworm or a tobacco hornworm. Both are common in North America. Both get up to four inches long. And both like chomping tomato plants. Most likely it is a tomato hornwormThe tomato hornworm is the larva of the five-spotted hawk moth, Manduca quinquemaculata. It has eight curved white stripes on each side of its body and a straight black spike, or horn, on its bum.The tobacco hornworm is the larva of the Carolina sphinx moth, Manduca sexta. It has seven diagonal white stripes, and its horn is curved and red.Sometimes you'll see hornworms with little white things on them. The white things are actually wasp cocoons. Small, parasitic braconid wasps often lay their eggs on hornworms. The wasp larvae eat the hornworm's insides then form cocoons when they're done. Eventually they kill the hornworm. While children will not like the wasps, farmers love them.Hawk moths and sphinx moths are also called hummingbird moths. They're really good fliers. They hover while feeding on flowers. They look a lot like hummingbirds!

Are wasps important?

Wasps are considered important pollinators, according to the US Forest Service (http://www.fs.fed.us/wildflowers/pollinators/animals/wasps.shtml). Though wasps are not fuzzy like bees, pollen doesn't stick to them, therefore, they don't pollinate as well as bees, but they are still considered important pollinators, most especially the fig wasps. Wasps are important because they are predatory to spiders, tomato hornworm & other garden pests thus they provide natural pest control. Without pollinators humanity would be in serious danger due to global famine.

What are the little white things on my caterpillar our caterpillar keeps getting little white sacks all over its body?

Hey!I was looking for this answer myself. I don't know if these are caterpillars on your tomato plants (that is what I am experiencing), but according to the site referenced below, these white sacks are the pupae of the Braconid Wasp. The Braconid Wasp is a natural predator of hornworms (my type of caterpillar). Apparently, the wasp lays its eggs in the prey, and when the eggs hatch into larvae, they begin eating the hornworm's organs. The white sacks are actually the cocoons from which the wasps will emerge.Even though the caterpillar was eating my tomato plants, I feel really bad for it. I might put it out of its misery. I can't imagine something eating my insides when I'm alive!Source:http:/www.tammysrecipes.com/tomato_hornworms

What is the best way to eliminate tomato hornworms in an organic fashion?

The best way to eliminate tomato hornworms is to use natural predators. Lady beetles, green lacewings and braconid wasps, as well the common wasp (Polistes spp.) are natural predators of the tomato. Lady beetles and green lacewings eat the larvae of the tomato hornworm, while braconid wasps lay their eggs on mature hornworms, which eat the caterpillar as it develops. Common wasps kill and feed off hornworms. If there aren't too many, they can be picked off by hand. They can be dropped in water mixed with liquid dish detergent to kill them. Another option is to use Bt (Bacillus thuringiensis), a natural bacterial disease that is deadly to tomato hornworms. It is sold in some pesticides, but they can also be used on their own. Bt produces proteins that paralyze the digestive system, causing starvation within several days. The disadvantage is that it is denigrated by the sun and foliar applications generally only last seven days or so. Though it won't work for current infestations, tilling the ground will help prevent an infestation the following year. Tomato pupae often inhabit the soil under tomato plants and winter over, emerging the following spring. The best results are gained when the soil is tilled soon after the tomatoes are harvested.
