The "Rinse" will also take water out, but you should really have a waste setting. Call a local pool company or the maker of your filter system.

Need more specific info A multi valve pool filter is a common configuration of valve and filter for a swimming pool system. The piping into and out of the filter is attached to a multivale. A multivalve has has several positions. One type of multi valve has six positions: backwash, waste, filter, closed, rinse and recirculate. (These valve positions are used on a DE filter. A sand filter may be different.) Use the filter setting in the nromal operation of your pool. This setting receives water from the pump and directs it to the dirty side of the filter media and then receives weater from the clean side and directs it to the pool. Use the Backwash setting to flush the DE from the filter and to a drain. Use the waste setting to flush water directly from the pump to the drain. The closed position is, well, closed. Rinse? Recirculate?
If the pool is really dirty then it is best to set the filter to waste.
Sand and DE filter have a multi-port valve that has setting labeled backwash, filter, recirculate and waste. by turning the handle to the the waste setting and vacuuming the pool you will flush the water out the waste line and not through the filter and back to the pool. Cartridge filters do not have these valves, you clean it by taking the cartridge out and hosing it off. you will not be able to vacuum to waste without adding a valve and a dedicated waste line. I have known pool owners to take the lid off the cartridge filter and vacuum letting the water overflow the top; not recommended, it will create bigger mess, and possibly ruin your pump motor. Try shocking pool with strong shock, using a clarifier and running pool 24/7 while cleaning the filter at least one or twice a day. The more you filter and clean it the faster it clears up.
If you're talking about your pool filter, it should be set to filter or run. Use the bypass or recirculate setting if you wish to circulate the water without having the water pass through the filter. Use the backwash setting to clean the filter.
The will be a stamped or labeled word on the base of the filter close to the port the will be your waste port.
most multiports on sand filters have the following settings* Filter Runs the pools water from your pump through the filter media then back into the pool. this is the setting that is nearly always used.* Backwash Runs pool water from your pump over the filter media and out to waste. This removes dirt that has been collected during filtration. A backwash is required when your pressure rises about 10 pounds over the normal pressure. Most sand filters have a clear bubble situated near the multi port where you can see the water running to waste, watch it and you will see that the water is dirty at first run the backwash until it clears then stop the pump. * Rinse Runs pool water from pool through the filter to waste further rinsing the top of the filter media. this should always be done after backwashing to stop cloudy water returning back into the pool * Re-circulate Simply keeps the water circulating from the pool through the pump and back into the pool. It does not put the water through the filter, stops the water from stagnating but still puts it through the static skimmer.* Winter/Closed shuts all the ports and is used when the pool is winterized shut down or to stop water from passing through the valve.* Waste Runs Pool water directly to waste without running it through the filter. This setting if manually vacuuming the pool and the dirt load is too high for the filter to handle. It is also the setting that is used for hand vacuuming when removing settled contaminant and flocculate after flocculating the pool. Never keep the pump running when changing the setting on the multi port as it will cause it to be damaged.
