Since the faith of the early believers was centered on Jesus Christ and on the fact that they believed Him to be 'the Christ', they were called Christians to recognize this fact. Christ is thus the center of Christianity.

The term Christian originated from the first time beliewers. They were called Christian as a sarcastic remark in Antioch (Acts 11:26).

The answer lies in the original Greek. 'Christ', meaning 'the Anointed', translated to 'Χριστός' (khristos); and followers of Christ were 'Χριστιανός' (khristianos) - Christian.

The first usage of the word can be found in Acts 11:26:

"and when he found him, he brought him to Antioch. So for a whole year Barnabas and Saul met with the church and taught great numbers of people. The disciples were called Christians first at Antioch."

The name Cretan was used as an insult. Origin of CRETIN- French dialect cretin- meaning liars who are stupid or vulgar. From the Latin cretin is christianus or Christian (1st known use in 1779) The implication was that people with developmental disabilities were"still human" When Paul & those with them were first called Christians in Antioch, it was meant to be a derogatory name.

The term, "Judeo Christian", in this case referring to Jewish converts to Christianity, goes back at least as far back as in a letter from Alexander M'Caul dated October 17, 1821.

The term 'Judeo-Christian', in reference to a common ethic, came into widespread use in the United States in the 1940s and has since been adopted by the Christian Right. In 1952, President Eisenhower spoke of the "Judeo-Christian concept" being the "deeply religious faith" on which "our sense of government…is founded," although this seems a misunderstanding by President Eisenhower of the views of the Founding Fathers.
