Steven Stone appears in the Pokémon games Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald Versions as the Pokémon League Champion (in Ruby & Sapphire) or the powerful "ultimate Trainer" (in Emerald). Throughout the course of these three games, Steven will appear to help the player character overcome various obstacles by giving him or her hints and/or special Items. In all of these cases, the player automatically enters a conversation with Steven. In fact, the only time when a conversation with Steven is voluntary is in Emerald Versionif the player approaches him in Meteor Falls after beating the Elite Four and Champion Wallace; in this case, talking to Steven will culminate in the option to battle him.

Steven also makes a two small appearances in Pokémon HeartGold & SoulSilver Version. He will automatically walk up to the player if/when he or she exits the Pokémon Fan Club in Vermillion City to inform him/her that a member of the Eon duo of Legendary Pokémon is now roaming the Kanto Region. After defeating the final/"ultimate" Trainer, Red, the player can find and approach him on the first (and only accessible) floor of the Silph Co. building in Saffron City. If the player talks to him, he will offer to give the player one of the Generation III Starter Pokémon of his/her choosing. In subsequent interactions with Steven (in the same place), he will offer to trade the player a Beldum in exchange for the player's Forretress.

Steven's most recent appearance is in Pokémon Black Version 2 & White Version 2, in which the only conversation that the player can have with him is in the Pokémon World Tournament, in which he appears as an opponent in the downloadable "Champion League" tournament.
