Color movies were first introduced commercially be Walt Disney Studios in the 1930's, but color was used in very few films until the 1950s. Most films made in the US by the easrly 1960s were filmed in color. Many of the classic films from the 1930's to the 1950's have been 'colorized'. Any old black-and-white films can be converted into color, but it is a time-consuming and expensive process.

∙ 14y agoBoth. For example "Ben-Hur' was shot in color, "12 Angry Men" was shot in Black and White. Reasons vary. It was cheaper to shoot in Black and White and for a time it was thought that 'serious' films had to be B&W. Big extravaganzas were almost always shot in color.

∙ 6y agoNo. Practically all major films then were in color. The first color movies appeared in 1908, and Technicolor debuted in 1917. It was still cheaper to make black-and-white, but by the advent of broadcast color television in the mid-1960s, there were extremely few movies filmed in black-and-white.
