Yes.

The Orthodox and Catholic Churches were one Church until they mutually excommunicated one another in 1054. The main issues were whether the Bishop of Rome (the Pope) had authority over other bishops and the adding of a phrase to the Nicene Creed without the benefit of an Ecumenical Council to make that decision.

Initially, the main difference, besides the ones mentioned above, was that the Orthodox and Catholics had different styles of what Catholics call Mass (Orthodox refer to it as Divine Liturgy). As time went on a number of other differences have arisen. The most controversial of the differences center around the authority of the Pope and their differing understandings of the role of Mary in salvation and the workings of the Trinity.

More recently there has been a thawing of relations between the two groups with each Church revoking their excommunication of the other. There is hope by many on both sides that one day the two will be reunited in one Church again. In fact, Pope John Paul II said of the Orthodox Churches in Orientale Lumen, "A particularly close link already binds us. We have almost everything in common."

What did the Roman Church and Orthodox Church become after they split?

Roman Catholic AnswerThe Catholic Church remained the Catholic Church. It cannot "become" anything else, as Jesus sent the Holy Spirit to guide it until the end of time. It will remain His Body, it will remain One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic. The Orthodox Church became schismatic (they are in schism from the Catholic Church).

When did the Orthodox Catholic Church start?

The Orthodox Church was founded by Jesus Himself in the year 33 AD, on the Day of Pentecost. According to Orthodox Christian beliefs, the Orthodox Church has always existed from the beginning of time (called the Church Triumphant) but the physical church on earth (called the Church Militant) was established in Jerusalem in 33 AD and continues to exist to this day without any changes to its dogmas and beliefs. From the Orthodox perspective, both the Orthodox and Catholics started at the same time, in the year 33 AD, when there was no such thing as Orthodox and Catholic, and there was only the universal Christian Church. So they both shared a common foundation for the first 1,000 years of their history. However, after that time, difference arose that led to the Great Schism of 1054 AD. This caused a split in the universal Church, which resulted in the formation of an Orthodox East and a Latin West. The Orthodox Church claims that the Latins (later known as Roman Catholics) split from the Body of the Church because of Papal claims of supremacy over the Church, and changes to the Nicene Creed (the filioque clause), which were not accepted by anyone else at that time.

Was Andre the giant a Christian?

As a Bulgarian, with a Bulgarian father and a Polish mother, He must be an Orthodox Christian, yes! But sense, Bulgarians assimilate fast, He might even be a Catholic Christian, but there is no question, He is a Christian. Bulgarians are Orthodox, Poles are Catholic. Presuming His mother was a Catholic and His father was Orthodox, with the likely for the time patriarchal marriage, He had to take the Religion of the father - the head of the family.
