No. The Serfs were called "Helots" and were mainly based in Messenia. They worked to provide food for the Spartiates, the elite Spartan class.

Hoplites were the Spartan warriors. The common image of these men in helmets, with a large shield and spear each, arranged in rows was called the Phalanx.

What are Spartan soldiers?

They were the adult male citizens of the city-state of Sparta in Laconia (or Lacadaemon) in southern Greece. As they had taken over other peoples in Laconia, they were able to use these as serfs to provide the resources so that they could concentrate on cultural activities and training as armoured warriors (hoplites) to defend their city-state.

Could helots be hoplites?

The helots were an unfree population group that formed the main population of Laconia and the whole of Messenia (areas of Sparta).A hoplite was a citizen-soldier of the Ancient Greek City-states. Hoplites occasionally served with the Spartan army.Addition:Hoplites were armoured soldiers, so the Spartan infantry was comprised of hoplites. The Spartan helots (serfs) were used as light infantry and archers, however later during the Peloponnesian War (the force which Brasidas took north in 422 BCE were helot hoplites), and later when the ongoing wars had depleted the Spartan hoplite numbers, they expanded the use of helots as hoplites, often with the inducement of being freed of serfdom (being bound to their plot of land) after successful service.

If Sparta's army became weak what probably staged rebellion?

The serfs of subjected Messenia who worked the land and gave half their produce to Sparta. For that reason, when the Spartan army left on a military expedition, it took seven helots (serfs) for every Spartan hoplite (armoured warrior) not only to use as light infantry, but to prevent them rising in their absence when Sparta was left unprotected.

What was the problem with the slaves in Sparta?

The problem was with serfs - the people of Messenia which was taken over by Sparta. The population was bound to the land and had to deliver a percentage of their produce to the state (= serf). They were so numerous that each Spartan citizen was allocated the payment of seven serfs (helots) to maintain them so that they could devote their main effort to military training. When a major military expedition was mounted, it meant that the number of Spartans left behind had to face an overwhelming number of restive serfs, so the expeditionary force took with it seven serfs for each armoured warrior (hoplite) to reduce the risk at home - these were used as light infantry, bowmen etc on the campaign. At the battle of Plataea the Spartan contingent comprised 5,000 Spartan hoplites and 35,000 helot light infantry. At Thermopylae the Spartan contingent of 300 hoplites had 2100 light infantry, who went down with the hoplites, so the famous 300 was really 2,400. After years of taking casualties in wars, the number of Spartan hoplites dwindled seriously, and serfs were recruited during the Peloponnesian War as hoplites on promise of release from serfdom (their own plot of land) if they served well.

In Sparta what use did slaves have?

Sparta relied on serfs (not slaves - serfs were people bound to the land). The serfs delivered half of their produce to Sparta, which enabled the Spartans to concentrate on training for war and their normal lives. The serfs were also used a light infantry and archers to support the Spartan armoured infantry.

Why did the slaves revolt in Sparta?

Large numbers of the slaves in Sparta were Helots. As they outnumbered the Spartans by seven to one, they were treated harshly in efforts to keep them under control. This had the opposite effect in many cases as there were several Helot rebellions. Every autumn, Sparta would offer open season on the Helots by declaring war on them so any Spartan could kill a Helot without fear of reprisal. Efforts were made to treat the Helots in the worst way imaginable. They were assigned tasks for the sole purpose of disgracing them. Each had to wear a dog skin cap and wrap themselves in skins. They were required to receive a stipulated number of beatings each year, even if they had done nothing wrong. This was to make them always remember they were slaves. Anyone treating the Helots any better than poorly subjected themselves to punishment as well.

When Sparta wanted to expand what did they do?
